Apple Watch SE vs Apple Watch Series 6: Design & Display

Apple hasn’t made major design changes compared to previous models, and visually, there’s almost no difference between the SE and the Series 6. Both feature an OLED display with smooth, curved edges. The key difference is the Always-On display, available on the Series 6 but not on the SE. Without it, the SE’s screen goes completely black when not in use, instead of dimming.

Materials & Colors

The Apple Watch SE is available only in aluminum. The Series 6 comes in three materials: aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium. The latter two are sold only through select retailers and at a higher price.

The SE offers three colors: Space Gray, Silver, and Gold. The Series 6 includes all three plus two extra colors: Blue and Red.

Processor

The SE uses the S5 chip from the Apple Watch Series 5, while the Series 6 features the newer and faster S6 chip, offering up to 20% better performance.

Sensors: Key Health & Fitness Differences

Both models track steps, heart rate, calories burned, and more, with an increasing focus on health monitoring. Both include:

  • Fall detection (with SOS alerts)
  • Noise monitoring
  • Heart rhythm notifications
  • Optical heart rate sensor

The Series 6 adds a blood oxygen sensor to measure oxygen saturation (SpO₂), potentially helping detect heart and lung conditions.

Battery Life & Charging

Both watches last up to 18 hours on a full charge. The Always-On display on the Series 6 slightly increases battery use, but it supports fast charging, 0% to 80% in about 1 hour, and fully charged in 1.5 hours. The SE charges slower, reaching 80% in 1.5 hours and 100% in 2.5 hours.
